It All Starts With A Conversation

Most people struggling with their mental health will speak with friends and family before speaking with a professional, so knowing how to handle these difficult conversations can be incredibly valuable.

1. Set aside time without distractions

It’s important to create a safe, non-judgmental space. Your loved one needs your full attention without feeling as if they are a burden.

2. Give them the freedom to open up

Always let them lead the conversation at their own pace, allowing them to share as much or as little as they feel comfortable with.

3. Don’t try to be a doctor

Try not to make assumptions or provide a diagnosis. Allow them to make their own decisions on what they feel might help.

4. Try to carry on as usual

Acting differently can make someone feel isolated. Try to stay in contact as you usually would and make social plans with them.

5. Look after yourself

Many underestimate how upsetting it can be to hear that someone you love is struggling. Be sure to be kind to yourself, and if needed, ask others to support your intervention.
